Scooby has had no problem stepping in to keep Abbie company while Matt serves his country with the Army National Guard. When all three are at home, they make the perfect family. Along with a new home and new owners, he's also got a new name … Moby. (Abbie named him after the singer and Matt after the whale.) Find out how Scooby is doing from his parents, Matt and Abbie.
First Day
Our first day with Scooby was exhausting! As we were wrapping the show, Scooby stepped on a bee, so we stopped by a vet to check out his foot. While we were waiting to be seen, our appointment got bumped by an overweight basset in convulsions. Since Scooby had stopped biting his foot, we left the vet and headed straight to PETsMART for a shopping spree. The staff was very helpful, and Scooby loved all the attention. Afterward, we all went to a friend's birthday party, where Scooby was accosted by hordes of children with cakey hands, but he was happy to help them clean up. By the time we got home, Scooby was pooped and slept like a puppy.
Home Fit for a Pooch
We bought Scooby a bed, a collar, a handful of pressed rawhide sticks, a new leash, some dog tags, a few tennis balls, a bunch of different treats and a Kong toy. He tore up the tennis balls the first night. His bed lasted a little longer, but eventually that went, too. He doesn't like the dry dog bone biscuits, only the liver snacks. His favorite is the Kong toy — a hard-rubber, awkwardly shaped toy that holds a few treats so that he has to chase it around the house and work to get at the snacks.
It's a Family Affair
Scooby is definitely an only child, and he tries to play mommy and daddy against each other. When Abbie scolds him for getting into the trash, he comes to Matt in the other room to play, but we learned that trick quickly and he knows better. We just have to work at staying smarter than Scooby! We love to walk to the movie store and pick out a flick for the evening. The clerks all know him, and he gets lots of love there. Then it's home for a quiet night snuggling on the couch.
Pooch Personality
Scooby is very intelligent, very playful and very loving. He's very protective, too. If he hears someone out in the hall, he'll run into the bedroom and make sure we know. If one of us isn't paying attention, he'll tell the other. He won't respond if we just tell him to stop barking, but if we thank him for alerting us, he'll give a couple of quiet woofs and curl up on the couch knowing he's done his job.
Getting to Know You
We have to keep Scooby busy with lots of toys and treats. If he gets too bored, he'll make his own toys out of our shoes and find his own treats in the trash. He's very aggressive toward other dogs, and we have to be careful in the hallways of our apartment building if there are other pets around. Sometimes he's trying to protect us, and sometimes he wants to play, but he just doesn't have very good manners yet. We're planning on taking him to school this year.
After the newness of it all wore off, Scooby missed the spotlight and cameras. He was a little confused, but soon adjusted to his new home. But it wasn't very long before Matt was deployed and he moped around the house for a few days again. He's getting used to Abbie being a single parent, and they are very close.
Favorite Pooch Pastime
Scooby loves the ocean. We took him camping at a beach that allows pets, and at first he was scared of the waves but now he loves playing in the surf. When he's at home, he loves to hang out on the balcony. He stands up with his front paws on the bannister and barks at everyone and everything in the yard below. He loves his Kong and playing fetch with it, especially when Abbie's trying to work!
Paws and Sit
He's pretty inconsistent with the Army crawl he learned in the show. He only does it when he feels like it. When he's home, Matt tries to teach him hand signals for the basic commands like "sit" and "lie down." Mostly Abbie has been working to socialize him with other dogs, and to keep him from jumping on people when he meets them!
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Dog Park
Scooby has learned the joys of chasing his tail. He does it whenever he doesn't feel like he's getting enough attention, because he knows everyone loves to watch him. Or when Abbie is sad talking to Matt on the phone, Scooby will start running in circles, trying to catch his tail because he knows it will cheer her up.
No One's Perfect
Scooby's only imperfection is his dog aggression. He barks whenever he hears something in the hall, and he continues to jump on people.
In Closing …
Scooby is the light of our life. He is so funny, playful and affectionate. We love him.
