Eastern Gray Kangaroo Arrow Trauma

Episode: "Amazing Aussie Ops"
Location: Australia Zoo
Veterinarian: Dr. Jon Hanger

Australia Zoo's Koala Hospital Rescue Unit responds to a call from a wildlife caregiver requesting immobilization and anesthetization of a mature female eastern gray kangaroo. The kangaroo has been injured by a malicious shooting with a hunting arrow.

Dr. Jon Hanger and his veterinary team arrive at the scene to find the arrow still lodged in the right leg of the kangaroo, which also has a joey.

Dr. Hanger darts the kangaroo and treats her on site with penicillin, then provides pain relief. The ends of the arrow are cut off to prevent further trauma and she is transported back to the Koala and Wildlife Hospital with her joey.

There, Dr. Hanger removes the shaft of the arrow, flushes the arrow tract with a saline solution, and places the kangaroo on strong antibiotics for infection. Afterward, the external wounds are cleaned and stitched.

The kangaroo is placed in intensive care with a 50/50 chance of recovering. Her joey is being hand raised and will be released into the wild.
