THOMAS FLOWER

Thomas P. Flower, field project manager of the Kalahari Meerkat Project in the Kuruman River Reserve, has been working on behalf of the project for four years and has studied zoology for the past eight. He holds a bachelor's degree with honors in zoology from the University of Bristol and currently is working toward his master's degree at the University of Pretoria. His current research involves the study of food competition in meerkat populations, with specific focus on the meerkats' methodology in resolving conflict.

The Kalahari Meerkat Project was established in 1993 as a long-term project dedicated to the investigation of the evolutionary causes and ecological consequences of cooperative behaviors in meerkats and is the inspiration behind Animal Planet's television series Meerkat Manor. Thomas Flower initially joined the project as a graduate intern but eventually assumed the role of field project manager after developing the appropriate skills for data collection, analysis and mastering technical equipment.

His role as field project manager allows Thomas Flower the unique opportunity of coordinating fieldwork, collecting data and maintaining a population of roughly 250 wild meerkats. In addition to his work with the Kalahari Meerkat Project, he manages the Kuruman River Reserve and conducts fieldwork for many Earthwatch projects, including conservation, science and tourism initiatives. Additionally, he coordinates the efforts of the film crew, capturing all the real-life drama of Meerkat Manor.

When Thomas Flower is not tending to his mob, defined as a group of meerkats, he can be found in class or bird watching.
