freshwater crocodile

FRESHWATER CROCODILE: Inhabiting lakes, swamps and billabongs in northern Australia, the freshwater crocodile specializes in staying out of the way of its larger, more salt-tolerant cousin. "Freshies" may enter rivers and creeks, but tend to stay far upstream, away from estuaries and coasts where fearsome saltwater crocodiles like to prowl. Rarely exceeding 8 to 10 feet in length, the freshwater crocodile is defined by its narrow, tapering snout, which is lined with dozens of sharp teeth. It may be a glass-jawed lightweight in comparison to its larger, more powerful cousin, but the freshwater crocodile is perfectly design for catching its favorite meals: crustaceans, frogs, fish and other small animals. It prefers to hunt at the water's edge, where it waits patiently for prey to wander by and then snatches it with a quick sideways motion of the head. It is one of the few crocodilians that can gallop — the quickest form of crocodile locomotion at up to 12 mph. A galloping freshie is almost always in escape mode and headed for the closest, safest body of water it can find — especially if a saltwater crocodile is on the scene.
