vervet monkey
Pictures: Jeff Foott/DCI |

VERVET MONKEY: What's cool about this monkey is that it has its own, primitive language that includes about 20 different calls, including several alarm calls for different types of predators. A quick double-cough means "eagle," a loud bark means "leopard" and a low chutter means "snake." Each call elicits a different response. When vervets hear the alarm call for eagle, they look skyward and seek shelter. The leopard alarm sends them scattering up the nearest tree. And in response to the snake call, they stand on their hind legs and look in the grass. These monkeys are relatively small and slow on the ground, so they never venture very far from the safety of the trees, preferring acacias alongside streams, rivers and lakes. They spend their mornings and afternoons feeding, and the bulk of their day grooming or napping.
