Rats, attached to tethers, move from trainer to trainer sniffing for landmines. Each rat has its own unique method for alerting the trainer to the presence of a landmine — some sniff, some scratch, some move around the area. Trainers must learn to pick up and understand each rat's signals. The giant pouch rat only weights about 3 pounds, much less than a dog, and does not set off the landmine. |
