Emergency Vets: Dr. Dan Steinheimer & Dr. Robert Taylor
Animal: Bear the Hyena
A routine exam by Denver Zoo veterinarians has uncovered an apparent tumor in the abdomen of a Spotted Hyena. To assess the severity of Bear's mass, the zoo calls on Alameda radiologist Dr. Dan Steinheimer. Using ultrasound, Dr. Dan is able to find the mass and the extent to which it has spread. About the size of a tennis ball, the mass is located near vital organs; but it may be operable. A needle directed biopsy will determine how aggressive the tumor is. If results are positive, surgery will be the next step.
Two weeks later, it is Dr. Robert Taylor's turn. The biopsy results offer hope for a successful surgery. The surgeon finds the large mass and can finally offer good news; entirely encased in the uterus, the tumor can be removed easily. After what amounts to a spay, the twelve-year-old's prognosis is excellent. Bear can be spotted at the zoo for years to come.
