Controlling Doggie B.O.
Q. About six weeks ago my 7-year-old border collie developed a doggie odor and began scratching. Until that time he never had a noticeable odor. He scratches different areas of his body. He has none to very few fleas, no ticks. I bathed him in Sargent's flea shampoo and used a conditioner that said it would control odor — not so.

Thanks,
Bobbie Johnson

Cooling Down Hot Spots
Q. I have an 8-month-old mix: Lab and golden retriever. She has been suffering from hot spots for a couple of months. What is it from, and what is the best treatment?

Thank you!

Managing Mange
Q. I have an American Staffordshire bull terrier female dog. She is 2 years old, sweet as can be. My grandparents want to put her to sleep, because they have spent so much money on her already. She has demodectic mange. She has had dips, antibiotics, vitamins, and I even a used motor oil dip, which I think helped her the most. I don't have any money since I'm only 15, but I would like any suggestions you might have to help her.

Thank you sooo much!
Andrea

Cat Constipation
Q. What can I do for my cat that is struggling with constipation? He was given two enemas since Labor Day. The vet has prescribed WD prescription food, 1/2 tablet of cisapride twice a day and 1.0 cc of lactulose twice a day, yet he is still having trouble pooping. He will start his bowel movement in the litter box, yet he seems to finish outside the box. He is 8 years old and has been on prescription CD canned food for his entire life. Can you please advise me on what else I can do?

Thank you,
Jodi Halbreich

Swallowing a Bitter Pill
Q. Our tabby is taking 2.5 Metronidazole 250mg half tablet for collitis. She refuses to swallow the tablet even though it is cut in half. Any tips on giving tablets to cats?

Thanks,
Miguel Hinderyckx

Doggie Indigestion
Q. What can you give a dog for indigestion at home? Our bichon ate something that did not agree with him. He is experiencing occasional heaving.

Laketa Tomlinson

Q.How common is colic in dogs? Are there breeds that are more susceptible to the disease? How can colic be treated?

Thank you,
Heather and Erik

Cat Pulling His Hair Out
Q. I own a chocolate Siamese, neutered male. He is 11 years old, and I have had him since he was a kitten. Recently he has taken to pulling clumps of his hair out with his mouth. The exposed skin is not in any way irritated, raw or bleeding. It merely looks like it has been shaved. He is prone to skin problems and in the past his diet was changed to a food for sensitive skin. We tried this again but with no luck. We also have a 2 1/2 year-old Westy (a spayed female) that has lived with us since she was a pup, and there have never been any problems between them. Two months ago we rescued a 5-year-old neutered male fox terrier. This new addition is never aggressive toward our cat. In fact he goes out of his way to avoid him. Any ideas on what could be causing our cat to pull his hair out?

Thank you,
Amy R. Vondersmith

Chow With an Earache
Q. Hi, I'm hoping you can help! I have a chow mix. He has been shaking his head and seems to be irritated a lot of the time. I noticed some discharge from his ears, so I cleaned them and applied some ear mite medication. It seemed to work for a few days, but it seems to come back after a week or so. My wife heard about mixing some garlic oil capsules and vegetable oil together and applying it. Can you tell me if this is safe, and if not, can you help and tell me what I should do?

Thank you,
Curtis

Kitty With Worms
Q. I have a young kitten. He is only about 10 or 12 weeks old, and we have taken him to the vet twice to be treated for worms, but he still has them. I even gave him worm pills and nothing seems to be helping. Please tell me what I can do.

Thank you,
Kelly

Poop-Eating Pekingese
Q. Why does my Pekingese puppy eat his own feces?? How can I stop him from doing this? He has enough food available to him.

Coping With Glaucoma
Q. Could you please explain how pets — such as my dog "Max" — get glaucoma? Is it treatable? Will the pet be able to see again? I would like to know where I can read about this condition.

Thank you.

Concerned owner,
Bonita
