ask the emergency vets
Dr. Knor Knows

Q: My cat has been diagnosed with diabetes. How can I keep her healthy?
A: Speak with your veterinarian about how frequently your cat needs to be re-evaluated in regard to her glucose curve. Stay consistent with insulin injections. Remember that diet plays an important role. I recommend Hills W/D.

Q: In the case of a fire, my family has an emergency exit strategy. What should we do to incorporate our cat and dog in our emergency plan?
A: Do not risk your own life to stay and look for animals in the house. If it is too dangerous, or if you aren't certain of your own safety, you should let the fire department attempt the rescue.

In the event that you are able to look for your pets safely, the American Humane Society recommends a plan of action. Before an emergency, you should have your pets identified with collars and tags. Prepare an emergency kit including a leash for your dog and a pillow case to carry your cat. If a fire strikes, know the routine and likely places where your animals sleep. This should help locate them. If you have multiple pets, I would suggest assigning one family member to each pet. Soon afterward, someone should take your pets to a veterinarian, where they can be treated for smoke inhalation and checked for burns.
