While it is the Australian penchant to shorten names, the Zoo Crew decided to lengthen Toby's already short moniker to "Tobias." Toby started as an Australia Zoo volunteer and became a full-time groundsman in December 1997. After working in the zoo gardens for a year, Toby was promoted to crocodile keeper, working alongside Briano (curator of crocodiles) ever since.
Toby was recently promoted to head crocodile keeper and is now responsible for the health and well-being of all of Australia Zoo's crocodiliansthis includes the saltwater and freshwater crocs as well as the alligators and the maintenance of their enclosures. Toby was personally trained by Steve and Wes on crocodile-handling techniques and gained impressive knowledge on crocodile behavior. Toby is also a member of the Crocodile Rescue Unit and plays an important role in the successful capture and release of these rescued animals.
Toby plays cricket, camps and photographs reptiles in his spare time.
