Stuart's first pet was a bird, and he has been surrounded by them ever since. After finishing secondary school, Stuart studied recreation management at university.

Stuart, or Stui, then started work at Australia Zoo in July 1996 as a laborer. Stui's passion for wildlife, especially birds, was soon recognized and he was promoted to head bird keeper in 1998. Stui's loyalty and dedication were rewarded when he was promoted to operations manager in August 2000. Stui is responsible for overseeing and organizing the construction and maintenance of the zoo.

Stui is a quiet achiever and gets the job done with the minimum of fanfare. Stui enjoys fishing and camping and admits to having a slight obsession with Star Wars memorabilia. Stui recently celebrated the birth of his first son.
