Episode 7: Monterey Bay

type size: [A] [A] [A]

Tristan and Vanessa have been around the world, and now they’re headed to America’s largest marine sanctuary: the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Perched on the central California coast, Monterey Bay is so rich in marine life it’s been dubbed the "Serengeti of the Sea." With one of the most abundant and diverse populations of marine mammals anywhere in the world, this is the prime location for Tristan and Vanessa to capture on film incredible marine life.

Tristan and Vanessa dive with curious harbor seals and film northern elephant seals. These two-ton bruisers hang out along the spectacular Big Sur coastline to mate and molt. But Tristan and Vanessa hope to capture the juvenile males as they train for the dramatic courtship battles of adulthood.

Tristan and Vanessa’s ultimate goal is to film the gray whale migration – an epic, 6,000-mile journey when thousands of the majestic animals swim through the sanctuary. Waiting there are killer whales ready to prey on the calves.

The gray whale’s only major predator, the killer whale’s ultimate hunting ground, is in the bay. The bay hides a deep underwater trench called the Monterey Canyon. As big as the Grand Canyon, it lies across the path of the migrating gray whales, and killer whales use its waters to ambush the young calves.

Waiting for the whales to arrive, Vanessa meets with a local whale biologist who has witnessed and filmed more killer whale attacks than anyone else. Meanwhile, Tristan embarks on the most grueling hike of his life, which takes him to a remote and secret location where a possible victim of a killer whale attack has washed ashore. As their story unfolds with unexpected twists and turns, Tristan and Vanessa eventually get what they came for – the chance to film a mother and her calf swim across the canyon.

This life or death voyage echoes a remarkable story of survival, not just for the gray whales but also for many of the animals in this region. Faced with extinction, conservation efforts have brought many of Monterey’s animals back from the brink and turned a near tragedy into one of the greatest conservation success stories of all time. Tristan and Vanessa hope their Monterey story inspires a new generation to join them in "catching the moment."
