Tristan and Vanessa travel to the enchanted forests of Madagascar to film the island’s famous, rare and enigmatic lemurs known as the sifaka. Traveling into the heart of this giant island, they come across an amazing array of landscapes, animals and people. Their destination is an extraordinary desert forest where the trees are covered in 2-inch-long thorns, and many of these are poisonous to the touch.
In this hostile environment, sifakas look like fluffy, cuddly toys, but this image is quite deceptive. These animals are tough! They can survive in the harshest of conditions, not requiring water to drink and moving with agility through the spiny forest. Sifakas show their true brilliance when they take to the air, leaping 30 feet from one thorn covered tree to the next.
Although sifakas are survivors, they face an uncertain future. The spiny forest in which they dwell is being cleared for farmland and fuel. For Tristan and Vanessa, it’s crucial to film these animals facing such threats, so that people can know about the problem before it’s too late.
En route to film the sifakas, Tristan and Vanessa meet a witch doctor and rescue a spectacular horned chameleon. They also encounter the sifakas’ cousins – the ring-tailed lemurs – as they leap onto Tristan and Vanessa’s vehicle. These lemurs are more adaptable and confident than the sifakas, so Tristan and Vanessa create a "Lemur Cam," a motorized ring-tail lemur with a camera hidden within it. This produces some interesting results and great footage when the lemurs come down from the trees to check out the "new" member of the group.
Meanwhile, Tristan struggles to gain the trust of the illusive sifakas that live in the spiny forest. But Tristan and Vanessa’s patience pays off, and their footage proves it.
