Tristan and Vanessa visit the ancient kingdom of Thailand, which is three-quarters the size of Texas yet home to 10 percent of all animal species on the planet. Their Thai journey begins on the streets of Chiang Mai, Thailand’s largest city. Here, at a busy street market, they discover a baby elephant that’s being lead through the streets and used to beg for money. The poor young elephant seems distressed. Tristan and Vanessa know their journey – to film the plight of the endangered Asian elephant – will be difficult and heart-wrenching. But they’re looking forward to meeting the woman who campaigns against the cruel trade and treatment of the elephants.
North of Chiang Mai, Lek Chailert runs an elephant sanctuary. Lek, whose name means "small" in Thai, is a petite woman with big ideas. She has created an elephant sanctuary and dedicates her life to rescuing elephants that have been injured or abused. She does everything she can to give them a better life. Each elephant has its own story to tell; many elephants are rescued straight from the streets, and others are mistreated in safari camps. Tristan and Vanessa spend two days filming these amazing creatures and witnessing incredible behaviors.
Tristan and Vanessa head south to film the few remaining Asian elephants in the wild. They set up a network of remote cameras to locate the elephants in this vast rain forest. With the camera traps in place, they begin filming in the jungle, taking in the vast, amazing wildlife. They climb the slopes of "Baby Elephant Mountain" for a sunset spectacle that cannot be missed. Along the way, they come upon a cave with a million wrinkle-lipped bats swarming in and out of the entrance. It’s an incredible sight.
The next morning, Tristan and Vanessa are on the trail of the world’s loudest apes, i.e., the gibbons. Tristan risks his life and climbs 120 feet into the branches of a fig tree. Here, after hours of waiting, he gets shots of gibbons swinging through the branches and gorging themselves on ripe figs.
Finally, after days of waiting, one of the cameras gets images of a young male elephant heading along an elephant trail, which crosses the only road through the park. Tristan and Vanessa race to this crossing point and film the young male and his mother feeding by the roadside. But their excursion nearly ends in disaster as the three-ton adult elephant decides they have seen enough and charges at the truck.
The Asian elephant’s story is a tough one to tell, but it’s one that’s filled with hope for the future.
