British Columbia III -- Salmon Poem
small text
large text
Dr. Seuss Style

The plight of the salmon may seem quite bleak
But the spawning and lifestyle is really unique.

They start very small — red and round
So the eggs are buried deep in the ground

And the big ones jump high — high above the tide
Like on a wild rodeo ride!

Upstream they go, to spawn and then die
And feed all the animals that pass by.

The eagles perch high up in the tree
On the lookout where these fish might be.

The wolves and the bears, they eat them too!
Most of their diet is salmon — who knew?!

And they drag the fish way in the wood
So the trees can grow as high as they should!

For the salmon have nutrients that is much in need
(Yes, salmon is great rainforest feed!)

And deep in the ocean, where black orcas lay
Are waiting for salmon to run in the bay.

And natives and locals like me and you
Well, we all eat the red salmon too!

Those salmon are essential — dead or alive
To help the B.C. forest survive.
