In this episode, Molly and David head to the National Institutes of Health, where the staff of the Children's Inn strives to make their home a more hopeful place for pediatric patients and their families, one child at a time. This not-for-profit residence joins forces with the
Backyard Habitat team to capitalize on the positive effects that nature and wildlife can have on our health — even to prevent or treat illness. By creating a restorative butterfly habitat, the team not only provides the physical resources of food and water for these wonderful insects to flourish, but also an intangible resource of peace and comfort to nourish the children during their own metamorphoses. Some of the inn's residents learn which native plants attract the spicebush swallowtail butterfly and red-spotted purple butterfly, and what shrubs sustain them in their caterpillar phase, as well as how to turn a pile of manure into a horne of plenty. The team also gets some insider information from a butterfly sanctuary in Brookside Gardens, in Wheaton, Md., and demonstrates how to make decorative garden stones to add a personal touch to
your backyard habitat.
