House Wrens and Chipmunks

Newcomers to Washington, D.C., the Millers miss the intimacy with nature that they left behind in Stonebridge, Ga. To make the Miller family feel more at home, Molly and David decide to uncover the wildlife living on Capitol Hill. How? By creating a habitat for house wrens and chipmunks in the Millers' back yard. But it won't be easy, because house wrens are "high-maintenance" birds. Each male must diligently build several nests in several locations. The female then picks which nest and which male she likes best. That means the Backyard Habitat team must give these choosy birds a number of options to look at all over the Millers' yard. Whew! Luckily, David explains how you can easily construct nesting boxes in dimensions fit for the selective house wren and provide them with all the nesting material they'll need by creating a crafty bird-nesting net filled with string, cotton and hay. We'll also build a veritable chipmunk chalet out of fieldstones and plant a smorgasbord of native vegetation.
