Box Turtles and Big Brown Bats

Molly and David tackle their biggest backyard habitat yet: the 700 acres of Camp Rockmont for Boys in Black Mountain, N.C. Camp director David Bruce and his wife, Cindy, want their campers to experience nature both in the laboratory and out in the real world. By creating just one small habitat for box turtles and brown bats at the new Nature Lodge Classroom, they'll give hundreds of kids every year the chance to study and appreciate wildlife up close in their own back yard. As David plants wild blackberries and strawberries for the neighborhood box turtles to munch on, viewers learn how to work with the National Wildlife Federation and their local native plant society to find the right native plants for their own backyard habitat. Then, Molly visits the Western North Carolina Nature Center, where she discovers a few interesting facts about box-turtle and brown-bat life cycles. Back at the camp, David demonstrates how to make a bat box, as well as a special bat lamp to shed some light on these mysterious nocturnal creatures.
