Bees and Black Phoebes
small text
large text
Forest and Sara Breese share a passion for organic gardening and are looking for a way to introduce natural pollinators into their crops. So the Backyard Habitat team is off to Costa Mesa, Calif., to show this green-thumbed couple a thing or two about the birds and the bees, and how they can put these creatures to work in their incredible, edible garden. They learn how easy it is to install a variety of bee nesting structures, and how to distinguish between different species of bee. Then it's time to strap on your best bee suit and get the "buzz" from beekeeper Jack Wickerd of Happie Bee Company. Finally, they find out why a platform with an open face makes a better nesting spot for the solitary black phoebe than a closed birdhouse, and how to bake up a batch of "energy muffins" for these solitary birds.
