Wood ducks and beavers have inhabited Northern Virginia lakes for centuries. Now that humans have moved into the neighborhood, it's time for
Backyard Habitat to create a habitat everybody can call home.
NoVa resident Elizabeth Menist is such an animal lover, she's even enthused about the beavers, a so-called "pest" species, that have caused her property damage. David installs wire-mesh cylinders to protect Elizabeth's trees and seclusion devices to prevent flooding. He then visits the National Zoo, where we learn more about the species of wood duck that share Elizabeth's lake. Next,
Backyard Habitat demonstrates how viewers can get an even closer look at these animals by making their own coffee-tin periscope. Viewers also find out how to make a wood-duck nesting box for the feathered friends in their back yard. Finally, the crew adds some delicious wetland plants to keep the beavers from sinking their teeth into Elizabeth's property.
