Coat Types

Keep in mind the old adage "beauty is only skin deep" when selecting your cat. The coat is probably the first thing you will notice — both the color and length. You may have a preference for a certain color, but try to look past that and evaluate the whole cat. The character, not the look, is what you will come to appreciate most of all. And in practical terms, that stunning longhaired cat will require frequent grooming, typically at least three times a week, so be realistic about the time you are willing to put into coat care. Both longhaired and shorthaired cats shed the same amount, but the hairs from a longhaired cat will be more visible around the house.
