Lek with elephant
Lek in Thai means "little one." But Lek's diminutive stature has not stopped her from trying to help her 3-ton friends. Fitzgerald shares Lek's history with the elephant: "Lek grew up with elephants at a time when they were still used to haul timber from the dense forest and provide the power to truck. During her lifetime she has seen the elephant's role in Thai life transformed by the tractor but most crucially by the logging ban, which the government enacted to save what was left of the forest. In so doing, they made the elephant redundant. But what do you do with a 3-ton animal that eats 200 kilos of food a day and can live for 80 years? Lek's answer was eco-tourism."
