Penguin Injection
After being cleaned, the penguins would be given a hydrating solution and vitamin-rich injection to help stave off malnutrition. Then the birds were placed in outdoor enclosures built like beaches with pools and sand. There, birds had room to swim and preen. Preening stimulates production of the birds' natural waterproofing oils — without which they would freeze to death in the ocean. After about two to three weeks in the outdoor pens, most birds were ready to be released.
