Baby birds in shadows
Orphaned Chicks
The spill hit right in the middle of the breeding season, and there was no hope of saving the chicks — as many as 15,000 young birds died. Still sporting baby fuzz, these birds were unable to swim and hunt on their own, and were totally dependent on their parents. When capturing the penguins, rescuers left most baby birds in the nest, and concentrated on saving the adults who, if they survived, could breed again the following year.
