Group of oil-soaked birds
Damaged Birds
Oil causes tremendous damage to seabirds. It destroys their waterproofing ability and burns their skin, eyes and throats. It can also cause major internal damage — such as stomach ulcers — as the birds ingest oil while trying to preen. This group of African penguins had just been brought in from Robben Island. The mobilization was one of the largest and most successful seabird rescues in history. Of the 38,000 adult birds handled, more than 90 percent survived.
