The penguin family is made up of 17 species belonging to six groups or genera. There is the crested group, whose members have festive feathers over their eyes; the banded group, which includes the African penguin, with the typical black-and-white bands across the chest; and the brush-tailed group, named for their long, stiff tails. King and emperor penguins belong to the large penguin group, while yellow-eyed and little penguins comprise their own groups.

Meet representatives from all six groups here, in our photo gallery.
