Chipotle the Cat

On March 13, 2007, I had a few people over for dinner. It was hot in the house from the oven so I opened a bathroom window, forgetting that the screens were out for the winter.

As our guests left and we settled in for the night, I noticed that our cat, Chipotle, was nowhere to be found. I figured that he was just playing downstairs. When I woke up in the morning I realized that he never came in and slept on the bed. We searched all around and finally realized that he had jumped out the window -- we even saw his pawprints in the dirt. I was devastated and searched online about what I could do. I found Feline Finders ( www.felinefinders.com ) and immediately called Lisa.

Lisa listened to my story and asssured me that we would get Chipotle back. Being feral and an indoor-only cat, though, he was hiding and scared somewhere. Lisa pulled up a Google Earth image of my neighborhood and laid out a game plan. My husband Evan made fliers that we distributed to our neighbors, and my dad and I bought a humane trap and set it up with mackerel. Lisa told us how to set up the trap like a little hiding spot.

We got lucky that first night, but it wasn't Chipotle. We caught someone else's gray kitty. I was so disappointed but Lisa told me to keep the faith. She encouraged us to set up another trap and keep in close contact with our neighbors.

Unfortunately, that day it snowed ... and snowed ... and snowed. It was freezing cold and windy, and we ended up with over a foot of snow in 24 hours. How could Chipotle survive? But we kept baiting and setting both of our traps, one at our house and one across the street per Lisa's instructions.

On Saturday night we went out for dinner. We set all our traps before we left. Once we got back home I checked the trap at our house -- nothing. I began preparing more treats, while Evan went across the street to check the second trap. All of a sudden I saw him running over and bear-hugging the trap ... WE GOT HIM! We brought in the trap and let Chipotle out -- home at last after four days and nights, and a foot of snow!

Chipotle was hungry, skinny, tired and cold. We fed him A LOT and he slept for a couple of days - otherwise he is fine. And I know we would not have gotten him without Lisa and the Feline Finders. She is the "cat whisperer" in my opinion - it's like she knows what they are thinking. But, most of all, she was a great support and sounding board during one of the most difficult times of our life.
