3-year-old pandas
Pictures: DCI |

A group of 3-year-old male giant pandas chase each other up and down an old fir tree. These pandas, in addition to the 16 cubs, six yearlings and two dozen adults, represent the future of the breeding program at Wolong. Most are the product of artificial insemination combined with natural mating. Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and Tai Shan were born using the same technique. Someday, when giant pandas have more of each other to choose from, scientists will study the role of mate selection. In the meantime, this crop of young pandas will soon be old enough to breed and Wolong plans to continue to reproduce giant pandas using their highly successful hands-on approach.
