Twins are born!
Pictures: DCI |

Wolong staff apply antiseptic to the umbilical cord of this 30-minute-old cub. Minutes ago, its mother struggled to hold onto it. She dropped it – her firstborn – shortly after her second cub was born. The panda’s keeper carefully reached into the enclosure, scooped up the cub, and raced it to the nursery. Wolong staff routinely performs this intervention. In a few days, the baby cub will be switched with the panda still with the mother, and that cub will stay in the nursery for a while, and so on. Giant pandas give birth to twins about 50 percent of the time, but need human help to raise both. Wolong’s record shows that both cubs have an excellent chance of survival using this technique.
