Visitors at the Wolong Breeding Center

A crowd of visitors gathers to look through the nursery window at the Wolong giant panda breeding center in Sichuan, China. On the other side of the glass, staff cares for several tiny cubs. Visitors see only part of the story, however. Most of the cubs in the nursery have a twin. Their mothers and the rest of the panda mothers live off exhibit, in the cubbing dens. In 2005, Wolong set a new record: Eleven pandas gave birth to 16 cubs— five sets of twins and six singletons. All survived.
