The cub, seen here, was quiet during most of the exam on Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, especially when held horizontally or placed in its box. It made sucking noises during parts of the exam, indicating that it wanted to nurse. Mei Xiang, the panda cub's mother, was calm throughout the exam until her baby squealed, after which she ran around the enclosure in a panic, producing several sharp, high-pitched barks. She calmed down quickly after the cub was returned to her.
