Sharon Deem, a veterinarian at the National Zoo, checks the cub's heart rate and respiration on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005. A close look revealed that the cub is a male. "The cub was very quiet during the nine-minute exam, and let out only one squawk when its mouth was examined," said a statement on the zoo's Web site.
