Smithsonian's National Zoo Veterinarian Carlos Sanchez listens to Tai Shan's heart and lungs during the cub's tenth exam on Monday, Oct. 31, 2005. Tai Shan, who's been walking for a few weeks, is learning to navigate from the exhibit enclosure back to the den using his sense of smell, in addition to visual cues. Giant pandas rely primarily on scent cues to communicate with each other and investigate their environment.
