Michael Whitaker is a member of Great Britain's first family of show jumping. His brother John, nephew Robert and niece Ellen are all ranked in the top 100 in the world. Michael is not only the highest ranked rider internationally in his family, but also Great Britain's highest ranked rider. He has four Olympic Games to his credit, including a team silver medal from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Along with four World Championship appearances, Whitaker has been in six World Cup Finals. In Kuala Lumpur in 2006, he finished sixth, and at last year's World Cup Final in Las Vegas he won the third leg of the competition on Portofino 63 for an overall placing of second. Whitaker helped the British team to their first place finish at the Hickstead Super League event in July. Earlier in the year, he won the 78,800€ Amsterdam Grand Prix by BCM on Insultech Quidame des Hayettes. In May, he and Mozart des Hayettes finished second to countryman Nick Skelton and Arko III in the 140,000€ Rome Grand Prix.
