"My mom gives me 150 percent, so that I can continue to do what I do." -- Maggie
MAGGIE McALARY, 16. Maggie’s mother, Susan, knew she had a horse-riding prodigy when her toddler expressed delight (at age 18 months) at a horse show they happened to be attending. Two years later, Susan took out a loan on her car to buy Maggie’s first pony, and just a few weeks later, the tiny tot was cantering – a highly unusual feat for a 3-year-old. When young Maggie was seven she fell in love with a pony that had been purchased from the butcher for $310, trained the pony herself, and went on to win the prestigious Pony Medal, the National Horse Show, the International Horse Show and the Devon Horse Show on that pony; all by the tender age of 10. Today, Maggie runs her own training facility to offset the phenomenal expenses of her riding career. Her mother buys ponies for $5,000 to $10,000; Maggie trains them herself, has child riders show them, then Susan sells the ponies for up to six figures apiece. Together, they’ve already bought acreage from the farm next door to support Maggie’s growing industry. Maggie and her new equitation horse, Peter Pan, are a true threat to Brianne and Addie. But Peter Pan — a beautiful 8-year-old bay warmblood who’s been with Maggie for four years now — doesn’t have the credentials or the experience that the other top horses have. Can he make it up in heart? Maggie thinks so.
