Norma Milton has spent a lifetime immersed in animal welfare causes, with a special interest in cats. She has actively rescued stray and abandoned animals for more than 45 years, and is truly a hero to the thousands of animals that she has loved, cared for and saved! Upon retirement, Norma was a founder of Caribou Pet Rescue (CPR) Inc. in March 2006, out of a profound love for unwanted and abused animals and as a means to curb the shocking percentage of animals euthanized in our area. She manages CPR on a full-time, volunteer basis, often using her own funds and home for overflow pets as needed. She writes a weekly pet column for the community newspaper and all articles for the CPR newsletter, works tirelessly on fundraising and grant writing, and oversees a nursing home visitation and elementary school program that she developed. Norma also traps colonies of feral cats using the T/N/R method (trap/neuter/return), and if possible, finds barn homes for adults and personally rehabilitates the young feral kittens in her home. She works closely with local veterinarians to provide quality care and low-cost spay/neuter programs that include a pediatric component. Norma also developed the first CPR cat/kitten foster care program within Aroostook County. Under Norma's leadership, CPR has rescued more than 800 animals in 16 months, inspired dozens of volunteers to donate their time and resources, and has had a lasting impact on our community, as evidenced by the generous financial support that the organization receives.
