Shirley McGreal founded the International Primate Protection League (IPPL) nearly 35 years ago and also directs its gibbon sanctuary in South Carolina. These complementary actions focus on global projects to protect the world's primates and direct care of more than 30 gibbons at the IPPL sanctuary. Shirley has worked with, helped support, and inspired over 40 grassroots conservation organizations, animal protection groups, and primate sanctuaries in many countries. These sanctuaries accept confiscated primates that have been illegally trafficked, and they have dedicated native staff members who educate other members of their community about the importance of conservation. Shirley's unique contribution is her combination of global networking and facing the daily challenges of maintaining a sanctuary. Moreover, as an unpaid volunteer, she pursues both of these causes with intense passion, which has inspired countless individuals who she has mentored around the world. Shirley coordinates an international network of 15,000 members, 31 field representatives and 26 advisers. She also spearheads investigations of illegal primate trafficking and abuse, exposing the perpetrators and, when possible, bringing them to justice. Many primates around the world are alive and thriving today thanks to Shirley McGreal's life work and dedication.
