Meet Tracy Land

Tracy Land has dedicated her life to prevent cruelty, neglect, and needless deaths by fighting overpopulation through spaying and neutering pets. She began working with the local no-kill shelter when she was only sixteen.  After receiving her veterinary doctorate in 1987, she opened a small animal practice, but was still frustrated with the number of pets that were being euthanized in our local shelters.  In 1996, she began Project Spay/Neuter to provide low-cost sterilization for low-income families.  Since then she and her staff have performed over 55,000 spays and neuters at or below cost.  That calculates to over half a million pets saved by not allowing reproduction! 

Tracy has taught numerous doctors her methods for cost and time effective pediatric surgery at no cost to them.  She has been instrumental in a study at Auburn University for birth control for dogs and cats by providing hundreds of ovaries at no cost.  She routinely alters puppies and kittens as early as six weeks of age for local rescue groups in order for them to be fixed prior to adoption.  She also gives discounts and free services in excess of $100,000 annually to local rescue organizations. Tracy's nominator Terrye Bradley says, "Tracy does all of this while suffering from degenerative bone disease, living in an apartment over a barn, and driving a ragged out Honda Civic!  She deserves to be recognized."
