Jill Starr is the founder and President of "Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue" in Lancaster, Calif. Lifesavers provides refuge, training and adoption placement for hundreds of wild horses in need. They take in abused, abandoned, neglected and slaughter-bound wild horses who live either permanently or temporarily at one of their two locations.
The Born to be Wild Sanctuary near Twin Oaks, Calif. provides a lifelong home for mustangs that are unadoptable or have been severely mistreated. There, they are able to live a tranquil life on 160 acres meant to mirror their wild heritage as much as possible.
The Lancaster, Calif. facility houses foals and mustangs who are candidates for adoption. Due to constant government round-ups, there are now more mustangs in government holding areas than in the wild. All of these horses face being sold at livestock auctions if rescues like Lifesavers can not take them.
Jill is nominated by Traer Scott who says, "Jill and her small staff work tirelessly to make room for as many needy horses as possible as well as to educate the public about the many modern threats that these wonderful animals face. I worked with her on a book project recently and was absolutely astounded by her complete dedication to the cause and the sacrifices that she makes for the horses. Currently, Lifesavers cares for over 200 horses."
