hero of the year

Chris Dodge is the owner and founder of H.O.R.S.E. Rescue & Sanctuary, Inc. This sanctuary offers programs for disabled children and adults, 4-H, Girl Scouts, kids at risk and more. The H.O.R.S.E. Rescue & Sanctuary, Inc tries to be a part of the healing process of all, teach love and respect and ways in which to break the cycle of abuse in both animals and humans. They also encourage families to volunteer as a unit, hoping to bring them close together through their unity in helping horses overcome their disabilities and move forward to a better life. Their primary goal is to save horses and they believe they can do even more through educating the public as to their plight while offering the opportunity to be involved in their daily care and rehabilitation.
Chris says, "Ours is a 24/7/365 operation. No one is paid. We receive no State or Federal Funding, so our donors must believe in what we do. We haven't had a vacation in 15 years and we've all very often had to miss family activities to be there for the horses. Bills have gone unpaid when funding is low and we've had to put in money out-of-pocket. But hearing from and seeing the families and horses we've matched just strengthens our belief that what we are doing is right. And, knowing that the horses we've placed or who are in our Sanctuary will know only loving care for the remainder of their lives helps us sleep peacefully."
