![]() More NomineesKelly Bettinger is a staff member at the University of Georgia, and she, along with Lisa Lowe, established a non-profit organization called Cat Zip Alliance/Campus Cats (catzip.org). The purpose of this program is to trap, sterilize and vaccinate feral cats on the University of Georgia campus. Once the cats are vetted, they are released back into their familiar surroundings and assigned a permanent caretaker. Tame cats and kittens are found loving, caring homes. Marsha Richmond who nominated Kelly says, "Our campus was literally overrun by cats until Kelly and Lisa (with the help of others on campus) got involved to establish this wonderful organization. Most of the cats are the offspring of cats belonging to irresponsible students and other Athens residents who did not bother to spay or neuter their pets. Others are abandoned by students who get a cute little kitten and then leave it behind when they graduate. By having bake sales, making and selling cat toys, homemade dog biscuits, and teacup birdfeeders, they have been able to fund this spay and neuter program to significantly decrease the number of feral and stray cats roaming our campus." They receive no money from the University, and face criticism from those who would prefer that the cats be trapped and killed. But while others merely talk about the issue, they take action and are solving the problem because of their love for cats! Kelly and Lisa are a wonderful asset to our campus community and to the community at large. |
