![]() More NomineesDorian Rence is an animal angel. She's a big-hearted gal from Oklahoma who wound up playing for the New York Philharmonic. Stray cats in the city began to worry her so she started rescuing them, many into her own home, despite illness or injury. Bitten and scratched, pooped and peed upon, she was undaunted! Dorian began the Artemis Project, a non-profit foundation for the rescue of cats and dogs. Artemis spays/neuters, shelters, vaccinates and socializes strays and ferals with the ultimate goal of getting each cat a loving home. Working with Lincoln Square Veterinary Hospital in New York City, Artemis provides medical care for even the most dire cases. Dorian has rescued countless animals in the last eight years. She began giving concerts to benefit the animals, commissioning pieces that would appeal to children and sending the message that there is a responsibility to all creatures. Thousands of children have heard these concerts and come away with a deeper appreciation for animal rights. Sherry Sylar who nominated Dorian says, "The people who adopt from Artemis, myself included, will forever sing her praises. We are reminded daily of her good deeds through the love we have for our wonderful pets. Thanks to Dorian's generosity of money and spirit, and her selfless commitment of time and energy, countless animals and people have formed lasting and loving relationships." |
