Bald Eagle

Scientific Name: Haliaeetus leucocephalus
Location: North America
Habitat: Woodlands, wetlands, rivers, oceans
Length: 28 to 38 inches
Weight: 6 to 14 pounds
Diet: Fish, small mammal
Special Interest:
Our national bird, the bald eagle is the only eagle unique to North America. Its massive wingspan can reach 7 feet in length. Bald eagles also have short, powerful grasping toes and long talons. The bald eagle uses its talons the same way that Quetzalcoatlus used its mighty claws — to pierce prey while holding on with its front toes as it flies away.
