Collared Lizard

Scientific Name: Crotaphytus collaris
Location: Central and southern United States, including New Mexico
Habitat: Desert and semidesert
Length: 8 to 14 inches
Weight: Varies
Diet: Insects and smaller lizards
Special Interest: This lizard gets its name from the distinctive black-and-white markings around its neck. The collared lizard may be a hundred times smaller than T. rex, but the two species share similar characteristics. Like T. rex, the collared lizard uses its powerful jaws to crush even large prey. The collared lizard can also run on its hind legs — a characteristic uncommon among most reptiles but similar to how T. rex walked the Earth.
