AKC/Eukanuba National Championship

Step One: Meet the Breeds

In Step One of our "You Be the Judge" interactive, you'll have a chance to examine eight breeds in the working group. Select a dog below, then click on the bull's eyes to find out what judges are looking for when they examine eyes, ears, head, tail and more.

STEP TWO: Meet the Challengers — Watch the eight challengers in action, keeping in mind what judges look for when they examine each dog.

STEP THREE: Choose the Winner — Next, select which dog you think should win the Working group competition.

STEP FOUR: How the Judges Chose — Now see if your selection matches up with the official choice for "Best in Working Group." How closely do your judging skills match up with an official AKC judge?

  • Akita
A natural hunter and guard dog, this ancient breed has a long, dignified history in its native Japan. Meet the Akita, an "emperor" among dogs.

    Boxer
Put up your dukes! At play, the Boxer is a bundle of energy; at rest (when is that?) he's loving and, above all, honest. Go ringside with the Boxer.

    Doberman Pinscher
A guard dog extraordinaire, this German breed — first bred in 1890 — is the perfect combination of strength, smarts and ferocity.

    Kuvasz
A clown at heart, this highly intelligent Hungarian breed is also a fierce protector. Get an up-close look at this impressive giant.
  • Mastiff
A king among canines, the Mastiff is the largest dog breed in the world. Yet behind its imposing size lies a heart of gold.

    Neapolitan Mastiff
A lion-fighter in Ancient Rome, this imposing breed is renowned in Italy as a silent but fearsome guard dog. Meet the wrinkle-faced Neapolitan Mastiff.

    Portuguese Water Dog
A fisherman's best friend, the Portuguese water dog was bred to herd fish into nets, retrieve lost tackle and act as a ship-to-shore courier.

    Rottweiler
A working dog that craves mental stimulation, the Rottweiler is highly trainable, reliable and loving in the hands of a responsible owner.
