The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is a small, flexible charity that embraces all measures that complement the conservation, preservation and protection of wildlife. It was established in memory of David Sheldrick, a famous naturalist and founder warden of Kenya's giant Tsavo East National Park, in which he served from 1948 until 1976.
Since its inception in 1977, the trust has played several extremely significant and important roles in Kenya's conservation efforts. These include anti-poaching measures, safeguarding the natural environment, enhancing community awareness, addressing animal welfare issues and providing veterinary assistance to animals in need.
One of the trust's most important projects is the rescue, hand-rearing and rehabilitation of elephant and rhino orphans, as well as orphans of other species, so that they can ultimately enjoy a life in the wild on their own terms when grown.
