Adopting From a Shelter

Shelters

Animal shelters and pounds can be upsetting to visit, but choosing a pet there will save at least one animal's life.

Some shelters are tax-funded, while others depend on donations and volunteers. Usually the animals have been seen by a vet and vaccinated, and sterilization is often included in the adoption fee.

Workers should be able to help you choose the best cat for your situation and give you as much background as possible about the candidates that interest you. Information such as whether the cat lived with other animals or with children (and how it reacted to them) can help you make your decision.

There should be a contact room where you and your family can spend some time interacting with each of your potential choices.

Many shelters will want to know about you, too, to ensure their cats will be cared for properly.
