Skishing

PROFILE OF SKISHERMAN

It's late at night in the Northeastern United States, it's freezing cold and it's raining. The kids and the pets are all asleep and everyone in their right mind is either already in bed or headed that way for a long, warm night of slumber. While the rest of the Northeast is counting sheep, there are a few men that are gearing up for a long night of fishing. Night fishing is nothing new, but there's a new twist on this practice that many people may think is absolutely insane. It's called skishing and it was invented by a man from Long Island, N.Y., named Paul Melnyk.

The concept of skishing is pretty simple. All you need to do is don a wetsuit and flippers, jump into the water with a fishing pole, and swim out into the water to fish. It doesn't always happen at night. At times skishermen swim out among the surfcasters. If you think this sounds crazy, you're not alone. This is definitely a fringe sport that hasn't yet caught on the world over. This hasn't stopped tough guys from places like Montauk, Long Island, from braving the elements for a very unique angling experience.

Judging from interviews with skishermen, they appear to be the sort that appreciate the thrill of the experience, but are mainly looking for a more solitary excursion, away from the throngs of daytime fishermen. Conditions aren't really a consideration as skishermen are game for even the worst weather. But at times the water can become very calm beyond the surf, leaving the skisherman with a very serene and calming experience under clear, starry skies. It's also a very dangerous sport, with the thrill intensified by the threat of sharks, riptides and boat propellers.
